La Nueva Generación

huapango huasteco
Kosciusko, Mississippi
La Nueva Generación (Spanish for “new generation”) brings the vibrant sounds of huapango huasteco to life, honoring the deep-rooted traditions of Mexico’s Huasteca region through song, strings, and rhythmic dance. Based in Kosciusko, Mississippi, this trio channels generations of musical heritage into dynamic, soul-stirring performances that blend past and present.
La Huasteca is a geographic and cultural region spanning seven states in central and northeastern Mexico along the gulf. Traditional music from the area typically features a trio, playing violin, jarana, and huapanguera, accompanied by falsetto vocals and the rhythmic zapateado footwork that defines the style. The word "huapango" likely comes from the Nahuatl cuaupanco, referring to the wooden platform used for this energetic, percussive dance.
Led by guitarist Santos Espino, La Nueva Generación represents a bridge between cultures and generations. Born in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, Santos began learning guitar at ten under the guidance of his father. His musical journey took him across borders where he became a founding member of Los Trovadores, the first huapango band in Texas. On violin is Emmanuel Ledesma, originally from neighboring state, Querétaro. Emmanuel studied under master violinist Guillermo Guevara of Guanajuato, bringing precision and passion to the trio’s sound with his soaring melodies and intricate improvisation, hallmarks of the huasteco style. Completing the trio is Santos’s son, Adan, on jarana huasteca (small guitar). Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Adan represents the future of the tradition as one of the first Mexican American huapango musicians in the region. Learning from his father, Adan continues this legacy with skill and pride.
La Nueva Generación offers more than a performance. They offer a living testament to the enduring spirit of huapango huasteco, connecting Mississippi audiences to the rich cultural landscapes of Guanajuato, Querétaro, Veracruz, Hidalgo and beyond.
