Melony Armstrong

Melony Armstrong is a natural hair braider, educator, and entrepreneur from Tupelo, Mississippi, whose work has helped preserve, and expand opportunities to practice African-style hair braiding across the state. For more than twenty-five years, Armstrong has built her career around natural hair care and a braiding tradition rooted in artistry, cultural expression, and the sharing of knowledge from one person to another.

Armstrong was drawn to natural hair care while looking for a skill that could allow her to build a business of her own. After taking a short course in African-style braiding, she continued learning on her own, practicing her techniques on friends and others without charge as she developed her skill. She eventually began braiding from her home before opening Naturally Speaking in Tupelo in 1999, becoming a trailblazer in Mississippi's professional natural hair care industry.

As her business grew, Armstrong wanted to do more than braid hair—she wanted to teach others the craft. At the time, however, Mississippi required professional braiders to complete hundreds of hours of unrelated cosmetology training and placed additional requirements on those who wanted to teach braiding. Armstrong challenged those restrictions, arguing for recognition of hair braiding as a distinct practice with its own knowledge, cultural traditions, and skills. Her efforts helped bring about legislation in 2005 that removed braiding from the state's cosmetology licensing system and created a simpler registration-style process. Since then, thousands of Mississippi braiders have registered to practice professionally.

Teaching has remained central to Armstrong's work. Through Naturally Speaking and her own braiding school, she has trained hundreds of people in braiding and natural hair care, passing along skills that can provide both creative expression and opportunities for economic growth. Her remarkable journey also inspired the 2024 feature film Freedom Hair, on which Armstrong served as an executive producer.

Whether braiding, teaching, or demonstrating her craft, Armstrong celebrates natural hair as an expression of beauty, identity, and culture. Her work shows how a beloved tradition carried in skilled hands can connect generations, create livelihoods, and remain a vital part of community life.
