Tailgating

There are few traditions that are as beloved to Mississippi college football fans as tailgating before Saturday games. Universities and colleges all over Mississippi have their own time-honored traditions that have become an integral part of game day preparations and have created a vibrant and ever-evolving culture as new students come in and new alumni are created. Some of the most prominent Mississippi schools to take part in this cherished past-time are Jackson State University, University of Mississippi (often called Ole Miss), Mississippi State University, and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Each university or college has their own distinct gameday history, traditions, and culture. Ole Miss has The Grove, a section of the campus that acts as the hub for all pre-game activities and is often described as a block party with tents, chandeliers, silver tableware—perfect for tailgaters who enjoy the finer things. Mississippi State University has become synonymous with the cowbell, including a longstanding tradition of b.y.o.c.—bring your own cowbell. Attendees of the game will hear the bell well before the whistle blows, signifying Bulldog fans are ready for a good time. The black and gold of the University of Southern Mississippi is on full display on Saturday gamedays, along with the cryptic unofficial team modo “SMTTT” written all over tents, chairs, and merchandise—“Southern Miss To The Top!” Jackson’s own Jackson State University brings the party with their popular tailgating traditions as well, taking place outside Veterans Memorial Stadium where the famous ‘Sonic Boom of the South’ often makes an appearance.

The comradery, community, and good times created by tailgating is palpable, with families bringing new generations into longstanding traditions. Each institution has created their own activities, culture, and longstanding traditions, while leaving room for newcomers to find their own way to celebrate their team. At the 83rd National Folk Festival, each school will transform their booths into a tailgating hub that celebrates the customs, food, and colors of tailgating in Mississippi.
