S.E.W. (Sew Every Wednesday) is a community quilting group based in Jackson, Mississippi, dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditional art of quilting. Founded over a decade ago, S.E.W. has become a creative and social hub for quilters of all backgrounds and skill levels. The group meets each Wednesday morning at Pearl Street AME Church and offers a welcoming environment where members gather to sew, learn, and support one another both artistically and personally.
The group was co-founded by master quilter Rhonda Blasingame, who has committed herself to being a teacher and mentor for Jackson’s quilting community. Through the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program, Rhonda has mentored numerous apprentices from S.E.W., many of whom have gone on to teach quilting themselves or pass on the tradition within their families. S.E.W. offers space for everyone to grow, welcoming participants no matter the level of skill.
S.E.W. is not only a place of artistic practice but also one of friendship and fellowship. Members often speak of the group as a second family, the strength of these bonds is evident in the way the group gathers to support one another, whether at quilt showcases or during times of need. Beyond the quilting circle, S.E.W. extends its care to the broader community. The group donates handmade wheelchair bags to nursing home residents, baby quilts to new church member, and prayer quilts to those facing hardship. S.E.W. offers free and accessible quilting instruction while fostering a space for connection, creativity, and care. As one member put it, “That’s what family does—support each other through all the ups and downs.” In every stitched block and shared story, S.E.W. reminds us that quilting is not just a craft, it’s a community.
