The Mighty Gospel Warriors

Bruce, Mississippi
In a career spanning nearly four decades, the Mighty Gospel Warriors have brought together several generations of the Judon family and others to create one of the most iconic sounds in Mississippi gospel. Founded on faith and family, they stay true to their gospel roots, performing in the quartet style that dates back to 1930s jubilee groups, while also adding a modern flair with the backing of a soul-shaking band.
The Warriors were founded in Bruce in 1987 when brothers Homer and Sammy Judon decided to create a new group together with David Welch and C.W. Vance. At the time, Vance and Welch were members of a group called the Heavenly Voices, while the Judons were members of the Spiritual Harmoneers, who were managed by their father, Hulet Judon. A native of the Ecru area, Hulet Judon began working with gospel quartets before his sons were born, sometimes bringing the groups home to rehearse. Homer and Sammy both began playing instruments as young boys and have been singing gospel for as long as they can remember.
Within a year of the Warriors’s founding, they had gained wide popularity throughout the South. Hulet left the Spiritual Harmoneers to manage and sing in his sons’s new group. Although Hulet passed away in 2021, two generations of the Judon family still carry on the family tradition; Homer’s son Terrence has played with the group since his teens.
The Mighty Gospel Warriors has recorded many albums and their most recent, Live from Albany, MS, was released just this year. This “semi-professional” group maintains a busy schedule on the regional circuit, while holding down full-time jobs. They have a loyal following of fans throughout the U.S., never wavering on their passion for faith, community, family, and music that moves your soul.
